about

This song was written in June of 2011. After discovering another ukulele artist, Lara Bonner, I became inspired by her use of suspended chords and creative progressions, so I set out to write a song. I actually wrote 2 of them during this time though the other is not publicly available yet. Another inspiration for this song was Melody for Melody by Charlie McDonnell.

An interesting thing to note about this track is that I only use variations of 1 chord through the entire song. I tried to create a song without needing to move my fingers along the fretboard whatsoever, and I was successful in doing so.

This song is about being in a relationship that has gone on too long to the point where the strong friendship that had originally sparked the relationship was deteriorating.

lyrics

Lyrics:

When I’m with you I feel grand, but it’s not the way it used to be.
Your mind drifts off to the corners of the sea; you set sail mentally.
It’s not like I don’t notice your eyes when I kiss you on the cheek.
I only wonder where you’ve gone, and if you’re still thinking of me.

I wish I were there Inside your head.
Are those tears from me? Was it something I said?

I hope not ‘cause then I’d be Worse off than you could ever be.
Cause if I found that I made you cry, I would as well and you know why.

I try to be the best that I can though I know it won’t have any effect.
‘Cause in your heart dwells somebody else leaving me to receive your love’s neglect.
Sure you love me one day or two, but inconsistency consistently shows.
My fire in your heart goes out no matter which way your intuition blows.

I wish you were here. Inside my head.
Either way I choose Leaves both our eyes red.

If I stayed with you things would get worse.
From the fun, from the tears, when you’ve made me curse.
Why would we stay together when it brings us rain.
The only way out is to stomach the pain.

I’ve gotta save myself to save you.
I’ve gotta save myself to save you.
I’ve gotta save myself to save you.
I’ve gotta save myself to save you.
